In September 2005, a majority of Methlabs assets were compromised by a member of the team, following internal disputes and threats.

The organisation's founders, Tim Leonard and Ken McKelland, as well as the majority of the organisation's staff and developers (including the developer of the PeerGuardian 2 application, Cory Nelson and the staff members responsible for auditing the PeerGuardian Blocklists) were forcibly removed from the servers. The domain names methlabs.org, blocklist.org, peerguardian2.org, and peerguardian2.net were compromised, along with money donated by happy users.

Shorty after this incident, the outcast team took up shop as Phoenix Labs.
