About Alwil Software

Avast Anti-Virus was created by ALWIL Software.

ALWIL Software is a Czech-based company, established in April 1991.

Our products were in development and have been on the market in the former Czechoslovakia since 1988, though, during that time only available in the Czech language.

The company specializes in security software, with avast! antivirus being the flagship product line. During the lifetime of the product line, avast! products have become both award winning, and number one in a number of key markets, as well as increasing market share year-on-year since first international release.

ALWIL Software is developed entirely in-house at our offices in Prague 10 in the Czech Republic, although we also collaborate with many other people around the world who can offer us the specialist security, process and translation skills we need to meet our customer's quality expectations.

Logging

For logging keep the logging level set to warning, so if you get a warning it will log only up to and beyond warnings. The default level is set to Info. If you want to keep the logging to a minimal space. set it to alert and will only log major alerts such as virus', trojans and etc.

Update Basic

These settings are very important, try to keep the Virus Database on automatic and the Program on manual. Those settings make it easy for you to stay up to date and also keeps the anti-virus program from reseting on you. Only update the program when you get your serial number updated for the version number, the serial number is specific to the program version, to keep this updated, please contact ALWIL SOFTWARE.

Virus definitions

Despite being freeware, avast! 4 Home updates its virus definitions on a regular basis and this process can be automated.

Scanning For Virus'

About 99.9% of the time Avast scans and picks up virus' and prevents them from doing damage to your computer. To do a quick scan for virus' is to do a manual scan and right click on it and click on scan [file name] and it scans the file type.

Image:scan01.png

and most of the time you're fine, but some times it will pickup on virus' and/or trojans.

What do I do if Avast can't remove or delete the virus?

Reboot into safe mode and delete the file manually!

When you reboot the computer and when its about to start up the windows spash screen press F8 and it will ask you to reboot into what mode to reboot into. once you select "safe mode" not the one with networking, jsut plain old safe mode, you then need to do a search and locate the virus and delete the virus and then run a complete virus scan of the computer.
